Job Description

JOB TITLE:  MINISTER OF MUSIC

QUALIFICATIONS:  Pipe organ proficiency, experience in church music and

conducting

TIME COMMITMENT:  Part-time, salaried without benefits

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Worship & Choirs

1. Select, prepare and perform service music for Sunday worship and other special services scheduled by the Church.

• Provide Church office with titles, composers, and other information as needed  for bulletins.
• Coordinate special music for months of July and August.

2. Develop schedules and music for Vocal and Bell Choirs for the church year in consultation with pastoral staff and Church calendar.

3.  Rehearse and direct Senior and Bell Choirs September through May.

4.  Develop and direct Youth Choirs.

5.  Play for special services and denominational celebrations as
requested and as availability permits.

6.  Rehearse with vocal and instrumental soloists as scheduled with these performers.

Choir Membership

Identify and recruit members for various choirs, maintain member lists and follow up on inactive participants.

Adjunct Duties

1. Secure and orientate substitutes for all absences.
2. Attend Celebration Ministry Team Meetings.
3. Maintain music library, including history of music performed.
4. Arrange for inventory and maintenance of choir robes (volunteer assist).
5. Track music purchases in accordance with stated budget.
6. Assist with Christian Education Program by accompanying music for special events and programs as availability permits.
7. Provide appropriate liturgical music for weddings and funerals as requested and as availability permits. There is a stated honorarium for these occasions
8. Maintain and develop professional skills through regular practice and continuing education.

Other duties as assigned by the Senior Pastor or directed by the Personnel Ministry Team.

The Thursday evening activities begin with a 6:00pm Soup Supper provided by Adult Fellowship. Service begins at 6:30pm in Fellowship Hall. Please join us.

Ash Wednesday emphasizes a dual encounter: we confront our own mortality and confess our sin before God within the community of faith. The form and content of the service focus on the dual themes of sin and death in the light of God’s redeeming love in Jesus Christ.

The Presbytery of Lackawanna will open two Volunteer Villages in March to coordinate flood recovery and to host visiting and local volunteers. The volunteer centers, sponsored by churches across the presbytery’s seven counties and by Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, will open at First Presbyterian Church of Towanda and at the Wyoming Institute at Wyoming Presbyterian Church on March 4.

Continuing the presbytery’s fall 2011 efforts, Volunteer Villages are established to provide space for meeting, fundraising, housing, and coordination of both local and visiting volunteer work. Out-of-town groups scheduled for this spring and summer include teams from throughout Pennsylvania as well as California, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina and Washington. The presbytery’s flood recovery committee works with municipal and service agencies in the communities affected by the flood to match victims with volunteer teams. Workers helped with clean-up and tear-down in Luzerne, Wyoming, and Bradford counties in the fall and expect that area to widen as rebuilding commences this spring.

Homeowners who need assistance are urged to contact the presbytery office for referral to the work-site committee as soon as possible. Volunteers wishing to use either volunteer center or join a work-site team should call the presbytery office for contact information. Church, community groups or families interested in hosting a dinner at either center for volunteers would be welcome, as would donations of funds or dry goods such as coffee, iced tea and lemonade mixes, spaghetti and manwich sauces, baked and kidney beans, canned tomatoes, and cereal. Anyone who received assistance from LIHEAP last year should receive their application in the mail for 2012.

To qualify you must meet the income brackets and provide the necessary documentation for all household income to the department. You must attach a copy of your main heating source to your application with the other documentation. Send the name and address of the utility company or fuel dealer to whom you want the payment sent. If your heat is included in your rent, attach a note from your landlord stating that the heat is included as well as what type of fuel is used. If you have a second heating source, attach your last bill for your main and second heating source. Check the appropriate box on the application for second source.

December Report

During December, there were 250 food orders distributed which provided food for 605 West Side residents. The 605 were comprised of 195 children, 367 younger adults and 43 older adults. These figures included 87 Christmas orders which also provided gift certificates from COCU through the Church and Community Ministry Team.

27 households were recorded by Statements of Estimated Income, bringing the total for the first half of the fiscal year to 410. These households are comprised of 1,179 individuals. Each household may receive 12 orders each year, plus an Easter and/or Christmas order. About 10% of the households receive 10 or more orders each year.
